You can grill this sandwich like a traditional grilled cheese, but we prefer using a pie iron over the campfire or on the grill. Whichever method you choose, we hope you enjoy the sweet, warm flavors of this grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich recipe.

Ingredients

  • cooking spray

  • 1 Tbsp 1 mayonnaise* (optional)

  • 2 Tbsp 2 peanut butter

  • 2 slices 2 bread

  • 1 1 medium banana, thinly sliced

Directions

  • Generously spray pie iron with cooking spray.
  • Spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on BOTH slices of bread. (Optional: Thinly spread mayonnaise on back sides of bread for better toasting.)
  • Place one slice of bread dry-side or mayonnaise-side down in pie iron.
  • Layer banana slices, leaving space along the edges for the pie iron to seal the sandwich.
  • Close the pie iron over the sandwich. Trim any excess bread and wipe away any excess peanut butter.
  • Cook your sandwich for 4 to 7 minutes, turning pie iron halfway, until the bread is golden brown. For best results, keep the pie iron in a hot area of coals, but not the hottest area. Otherwise, the bread might burn before the filling is warmed.
  • Carefully remove the sandwich from the pie iron.
  • Cook on Grill Alternative: Preheat the grill on medium heat (300 to 400 degrees). Place pie iron directly on the grill and cook for approximately 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown

Notes

  • Mayonnaise results in a better-toasted sandwich (even better than butter). It adds a bit more crispiness to balance out the soft PB & banana filling.
