Sweet & Savory! This recipe has overlapping ingredients with our Pie Iron Grilled Cheese & Tomato Sandwich. So, it’s a perfect sandwich variation for your camping lunch menu.

Ingredients

  • 1 1 Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced (skin removed if desired)

  • 2 Tbsp 2 butter

  • 1 Tbsp 1 pure maple syrup

  • 4 slices 4 sourdough bread

  • 2 Tbsp 2 mayonnaise*

  • 4 slices 4 cheddar cheese

Directions

  • Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the pie iron. Add the apple slices and cook over medium-high heat on the campfire or grill, until deeply browned.**
  • Flip the apples and drizzle them with maple syrup. Cook over medium-high heat until browned on this side.
  • Remove the caramelized apples from the pie iron and wipe the skillet clean, careful not to burn yourself.
  • Spread a 1/2 tablespoon of mayonnaise on one side of two slices of sourdough bread.
  • Place 1 slice of sourdough bread in the pie iron, mayo side down.
  • Add 1 slice of cheese, some caramelized apple slices, and another slice of cheese. Top with the other slice of sourdough bread, mayo side up.
  • Close the pie iron over the sandwich. Trim any excess bread.
  • Cook your sandwich for 4 to 7 minutes, turning pie iron halfway through, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted. For best results, keep the pie iron in a hot area of coals, but not the hottest area. Otherwise, the bread might burn before the cheese melts.
  • Carefully remove the sandwich from the pie iron. Repeat steps 4-8 for the second sandwich.
  • Cook on Grill Alternative: Preheat the grill on medium heat (300 to 400 degrees). Place pie iron directly on the grill and cook for approximately 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Notes

  • *You can substitute butter for the mayo, but mayo toasts better without burning as easily.
  • **If you prefer, you can caramelize the apples in a separate skillet using the same instructions.
  • Don’t forget to generously spray your pie iron for each sandwich!
