Jump to Recipe

Basic ham and cheese sandwiches are a go-to for campers since they’re an easy crowd-pleaser. But with the right cheese and the right bread, you can take this camping staple to the next level.

And, there’s an added plus! This recipe uses many of the same ingredients as our Pie Iron Grilled Cheese & Tomato Sandwich. So, it’s the perfect sandwich variation for lunch the next day.

While you can toast this sandwich in a pan, it turns out best when grilled in a pie iron. You can use the pie iron over the campfire or frill (we tell you how!).

This recipe uses many of the same ingredients as our Pie Iron Grilled Cheese & Tomato Sandwich. So you can use the same ingredients for different sandwiches on your camping trip.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices 4 sandwich bread (preferably sliced sourdough)

  • 2 Tbsp 2 mayonnaise

  • 4 ounces 4 Gruyere cheese, grated (or mozzarella)

  • 4 ounces 4 ham, thinly sliced (or deli)

  • 1 1 tomato, thinly sliced

  • 4 4 lettuce leaves

Directions

  • Generously spray pie iron with cooking spray.
  • Spread a 1/2 tablespoon of mayonnaise on one side of two slices of bread.
  • Place one slice of bread in pie iron, mayonnaise side down.
  • Add 1 ounce of Gruyere, 2 ounces of ham, a layer of tomato, 2 lettuce leaves, and top with 1 more ounce of Gruyere. Place another slice of bread on top, mayonnaise side up.
  • Close the pie iron over the sandwich. Trim any excess bread.
  • Cook your sandwich for 4 to 7 minutes, turning pie iron halfway, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. For best results, keep the pie iron in a hot area of coals, but not the hottest area. Otherwise, the bread might burn before the cheese melts.
  • Carefully remove the sandwich from the pie iron. Repeat steps 1-6 for the second sandwich.
  • Cook on Grill Alternative: Preheat the grill on medium heat (300 to 400 degrees). Place pie iron directly on the grill and cook for approximately 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Notes

  • Don’t forget to generously spray your pie iron for each sandwich!
  • You can substitute butter for the mayo, but mayo toasts better without burning as easily.
